Congratulations for landing an interview!  Being selected for this step in the search process is a big deal.  Out of all the applicants, you have been determined to be a potential fit based on your previous experience and expertise which is a huge accomplishment.  Still, interviews can be nerve wracking, especially if you are in the running for your dream position.  Don’t worry, this is completely normal.  Our preparation method is designed to help you push those nerves to the side so you can present your best self on interview day.

  1. Practice, practice, practice. This may sound obvious, but you would be surprised at how many people skip this essential step.  Focus on questions you know you are going to be asked like: Why do you want this job? Walk me through your resume. What are your greatest strengths? Practice answering these questions with a friend or family member, or even in front of a mirror.  When you can answer these questions with confidence, it makes a world of difference.
  2. Study. Investigate the organization. What is their history and how does it influence their vision and mission? What specifically attracts you to the organization? This groundwork can be instrumental in displaying your passion for the position.  Also, don’t be afraid to find out who is interviewing you so you can research them as well. This makes it easier for you to establish a connection with your interviewer(s).
  3. Organize your materials. Read through your application materials like your cover letter and your resume. Compare them to the position description and make notes on specific instances you know you are accomplished in. Make sure to tie these into your answers. This shows you understand the responsibilities of the position and the organization.  When going over the materials, you may notice areas where you might be less experienced than what the position description is calling for.  Be prepared to be asked about any potential learning curves.  Additionally, form questions of your own.  Jot these down so you are ready when asked at the end of the interview: “Do you have any questions for me?”
  4. Choose your outfit. Make sure your professional clothes fit – especially after the pandemic.  After working from home, you may need to dust off the business attire.  Nothing can cause more panic than realizing your favorite dress shirt has a stain, or that your dog has chewed up a pair of your loafers.  Even if your interview is over video, dress the part. It makes a huge difference in your demeanor.
  5. Get a full night of sleep and start the day off strong with a healthy meal. You have done everything you can do to mentally prepare.  However, physically taking care of your body plays a part in the interview preparation process as well. Ensure your body is adequately rested and fuel it for a big day ahead. These are some of the best ways to keep your mind sharp.

Most importantly, be yourself.  You have already demonstrated that you have the right experience. This is your chance to further express your passion and superstar personality. You got this!
